Prairie conservation The Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) implemented a strategic conservation framework and outreach strategy during 2012, its third year of operations. To support on-the-ground landscape conservation. To ensure a bright future for fish and wildlife in the face of widespread threats such as drought, climate change and large-scale habitat fragmentation, Conserving these large landscapes.
and to help fish and wildlife a conservation has been made to help, the Service has developed draft technical guidance to help employees and partners establish biological outcomes at defined landscape scales. This guidance describes a standard process and criteria for defining biological outcomes using a surrogate species approach, reducing the burden of addressing the requirements of many species individually. Prairie destruction Grasslands once covered much of central North America from the Rocky Mountains to Lake Michigan. Now, only small, often isolated fragments remain. In the east, where tall grass was dominant, less than 1% still exists. grasslands are also facing many invading species such as alien weeds that come in and destroys food sources for plants and animals. weeds such as the musk thistle and the European buckhorn.
Also grass lands needs natural fires to help restore the soil and spread the seeds so they can grow, but fire departments blow them out before they can spread and help the grassland. and now that many prairies exist as isolated patches, natural fires almost never start and those patches will vanish. citations- http://www.grasslandheritage.org/prairie_threats.php - http://prairierestoration.weebly.com/destruction-of-prairies.html http://texasprairie.org/index.php/learn/about_prairies_entry/why_ protect_and_restore_prairie/ |
